It's summer and boy is it
ever
wedding season. When I first started in this business I thought
that June was "the" wedding month. Turns out it's July. There are so
many things that I've wanted to add to the site and just haven't had
time with all the weddings. One of the problems of being your own
web master is that there isn't anyone you can just hand the materials
to
and say "add this would you?" So now here we are well into summer and
I'm just now getting the newsletter updated.
This year has been one of changes for our family. A few months ago we
were forced to move my much loved grandmother into an adult foster
home. Her new home is a very beautiful place with gardens and beautiful
furnishings but like she tells me every time I talk to her, "it just
isn't home."
My grandmother lived in a little house that she and grandpa Frank
bought for $1,200.00 years ago. When we were children, you could walk
into the kitchen and reach up and touch the end of the slanted ceiling.
I guess in this day and age, you would call it more of a shanty than
anything else. But they worked together to make it a good home
to raise their two boys and later to entertain their grandkids. There
was always a huge garden in the back with the most wonderful berries
and tomatoes. They grew everything you can imagine and there were
colorful zinnia's everywhere. And red geraniums in the windows.
Always red geraniums.
There is no doubt where my love of gardening and flowers came from.
When I look around my own home at the pink geraniums in the windows I
think of my grandma. I went home when her property sold and
helped her clean out the house. It was very interesting to me to
see the things that each of her children and grandchildren
considered treasures. While I brought home faded floral prints that
hung in her bedroom, some old wool blankets that she had when her boys
were young and her china and canning pot, my brother gathered the poker
chips we used to play with and the old denim quilt that went from fort
building material to yard camping bedroll. My sister Michelle took home
Buddy bear, the ratty old teddy that we all loved for years. None of
these treasures were valuable in their own right, but to my siblings
and I, they were priceless.
It was sad to see the house that had been "grandma's house" for so many
years sell, but every time I look around my home I see things that take
me back there and evoke memories of the most wonderful, fun spirited
grandmother that a child could ever wish for.
So, the red geraniums at the bottom of this issue are in honor of my
grandmother Lillian Smith Mulkey and the love of beautiful flowers and
birds that she instilled in me. Every kid should have a grandma like
her.
Wishing you a wonderful summer filled with Love and Laughter,
